While the vast majority of elders want to reside at home for as long as possible, many folks eventually require a level of care that makes living at home impossible, even with home care services like those I mentioned in my last newsletter.
Does this mean a move to the nursing home is the inevitable next step? Fortunately, no.
Assisted living provides a high level of customized care in a residential setting. I liken it to going back to college. Residents typically enjoy plenty of social engagement, with access to social programs and activities, community rooms, and more. You are encouraged to bring your own furniture and personal items, which gives your room a homier feel.
The level of care provided varies according to individual needs and is based on an assessment when residents move in. Available services often include assistance with bathing, using the bathroom, dressing, and grooming; medication management; housekeeping; laundry; meals; and transportation services. Your plan can include some or all of these services, and it can evolve over time as your needs change.
Assisted living settings vary from multi-acre campuses to high-rise apartments and everything in between. However, one constant is the approach: to treat residents with dignity, provide privacy, and encourage independence.
If you think that assisted living might be right for you or a loved one, I would love to explain your options and create a plan to cover the costs. Some of the government programs available for home care are also available to those in need of assisted living.
Until next time, take careā¦
